The Boys sent by the Magistrates to the Reformatory have hitherto been only charged $1 each per month, the Poor-box paying the difference. The Colony now pays the whole, viz.: $3 per cap.
The $200 estimated for washing have not been claimed by the Gaol.
This increase of expenditure has been caused by the opening of the Wanchai Examination
Room.
This excess is for Clothing, Accoutrements, Purchase and Repairs of Boats, and Rations. The decrease of expenditure is consequent on the decrease of the number of prisoners.

There is a saving under this heading in consequence of several works proposed and voted ja the Estimates not being carried out, such as Reconstruction of Praya Wall, new Magistracy, Repairs to Civil Hospital, and new Quarters for the Medical Officer, but nevertheless votes are required in the Supplementary Estimate for completions of old Works commenced and estimated for in former years as well as for new Works since approved, and lastly for the excess of expenditure over the amount estimated for particular Works.
The postponement of the Paving of the Streets, and sanitary improvements in Taipingshan have
led to the reduction.
The increase has been principally caused by the reception of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, Furniture for Government House, and contributions to the Native District Watchmen.
The contemplated purchase of the site for the new Magistracy has not been effected. The purchase of the Colonial Vessel and Steam Launch has been defrayed out of the Special Fund. Whilst the cost of maintenance has been erroneously charged to Harbor Master's Establishment.
This arises from the difference in Exchange.
